Do Heat Pumps Provide Heating AND Cooling? Absolutely.

Heat pumps move heat instead of generating it, making them one of the most efficient HVAC solutions available. But because they’re working all 12 months of the year, they naturally experience more wear than a traditional furnace-and-AC setup.

Routine heat pump maintenance is essential to:

  • Maintain efficiency

  • Prevent unexpected breakdowns

  • Reduce utility bills

  • Extend equipment lifespan

If your heat pump’s performance starts dropping, Pipeworks Mechanical offers fast, reliable repairs no matter the make or model. Our team has extensive experience fixing inverter systems, air-source units, mini-splits, and hybrid setups across New Jersey.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

One of the first signs of a problem with your heat pump is an unexplained increase in your utility bill. Using your heat pump as an air conditioner or heater throughout the year gives you a good idea of what your bill should look like, and your utility expenses should remain fairly consistent. If your utility bill goes up and you haven’t used your heat pump more than normal, you may have a heat pump issue.

As your heat pump gets older, it naturally decreases in efficiency. Heat pumps typically last between 10 to 15 years, so an older system not only performs worse, but also may be less energy-efficient than a newer pump. Keep in mind that regular tune-ups and maintenance go a long way toward keeping the heat pump in good working condition. Cleaning the unit and performing minor repairs help keep it running smoothly.

A properly functioning heat pump heats and cools your space consistently, meaning that each room stays at the temperature set on the thermostat. When a heat pump starts blowing air that doesn’t fit the thermostat settings, or the heat in different rooms varies, it may be time to call an expert.

In some cases, the heat pump may not be the issue. A malfunctioning thermostat or leaks in your duct system can also cause inconsistent temperatures. However, some signs that point to heat pump problems include:

  • Dirty or clogged air filters
  • Dirty blower motor
  • Incorrectly sized heat pump for your home

While you can change the air filter yourself (and should do so at least every three months), any other issues should be looked at by a professional.

Every type of HVAC system makes some noise while in use. But when your heat pump starts making unfamiliar noises, it may be time to call for heat pump repair. A working heat pump makes a small clicking noise when it turns on and off, and operates at a low hum while the air circulates through your home. Other sounds may be considered unusual, including:

  • Grinding, which indicates a blower motor issue
  • Squealing due to a loose or damaged fan belt
  • Clicking from control panel or circuit board problems

Again, most heat pump system repairs require an experienced technician, so call a professional immediately.

Heat pumps shouldn’t emit an odor while running, so if you smell something unusual, you may need to call a professional. A burning smell coming from your vents may indicate a problem with the heat pump wiring. Dusty or moldy smells may be the result of a clogged air filter. In every case, it’s important to handle the issue quickly before it escalates into a more severe problem.
